A couple weeks ago I posted about our planned support for Samaritans (Click Here). Well we decided to do a “Mufti-Friday” and managed raise a massive £23.40!!!
Ok……so it wasn’t that much, but that gives you no exuse to not join in! If everyone did this we would raise an unreal amount of money. The saying “every little helps” really does ring true.
Now get your a** over to the Donation Page and give what you can!
Last night I had a visit from Helena & Mark who where raising awareness for the charity Samaritans. They were telling me that suicide is now a larger cause of death than car accidents in young people. They have inspired me to help raise awareness myself and also a donation towards the Samaritans cause.
They are opening a new helpline system that I would like our donation to go towards, as last year 280,000 callers received an engaged tone even though in many cases volunteers were waiting to listen. Also recently they have seen a 20% increase in calls, with 1 in 5 callers expressing suicidal feelings. The problem is with their current communications system, which cannot re-route calls UK wide in the complex manner required.
Samaritans Connect will allow them to answer 70,000 more calls a year, meaning that callers in distress do not receive an engaged tone. Cost £750,000.
The chairty was founded by Chad Varah. He was a man of God, a scientist, mathematician, musician, linguist and public debater extraordinaire. The first funeral Chad took as curate, was of a young girl who had taken her own life – it was this experience that prompted Chad’s his lifelong commitment to suicide prevention.
If you would like to make a donation yourself please visit their donation page here.
If you feel you need to speak to someone yourself, you can call them on 0845 90 90 90 (UK).
You can also volunteer, call 08705 62 72 82.
I will update you soon on how we will be raising a donation and how it all goes.
So, last week we had a mufti-day Friday with a minimum donation of £4.00. Quite steep I know, but we needed to raise a decent amount. We got a great response with nearly everyone getting involved.
We managed to raise an awesome £40.00, which is pretty amazing for just a mufti-day!
I’m sending off the check today. Well done ladies and gentleman!
Remember if you would like to make a donation to this particular cause yourself, visit the Offical British Red Cross Japan Tsunami Donation page here.
I would just like to leave you with a snippet of an internal e-mail that our very own Julian Sonnessa wrote.
“ It is important to remember that although its great to come to work in something other than a shirt and tie, there is a very important reason why we are doing this. The Japanese Tsunami cost the lives of literally tens of thousands of people, with more dying every day and even though you may think the sum of £4.00 insignificant or even too much, it will make a huge difference to someone.”
Amen.
